B. U. Wrestlers Defeat Springfield College, 27-15

BOSTON - Wrestling in its third home match in five days, the Boston University wrestling team got out to a fast start and held on to defeat Division III Springfield College, 27-15, on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Case Gym.
B. U. (5-1, 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association) won its first five matches, racing out to a 21-0 lead. Sophomore Rayes Gonzales (Las Vegas, Nev.) started the match at 157 with a 7-4 decision over Springfield's Mark Mendes. Junior Leighton Brady (Tulsa, Okla.) then pinned Matt Sambuco 1:43 into their match at 165 to give B. U. a 9-0 advantage.
At 174, junior Ben Schilens (Westlake, Ohio) won an 8-5 decision over Mike McWilliams and senior Ed Strauss earned an 11-3 win over P. J. Rovinelli at 184 to push B. U.'s lead to 15-0.
Senior co-captain Chad Grant (Edin Rapids, Mich.) took down the Pride's Tom Medonis by technical fall at 197 to give the Terriers their biggest lead at 21-0.
Springfield (8-1), which suffered its first dual-match loss of the season, started to climb back, winning three of the next four matches. At heavyweight, the Pride's Phillip McGeough won a close, 3-2, decision over B. U. sophomore Courtney Howard (Sitka, Alaska) to put Springfield on the board at 21-3.
Freshman Michael Galorenzo (Oradell, N. J.) defeated Justin Friend at 125, before Springfield picked up a win by forfeit at 133. Springfield's Peter Marques was the recipient of the free pass.
The Pride's Keith Poloskey's match at 141 against the Terriers' sophomore Joey Rivera (Stroudsburg, Pa.) went in the final period before Polosky got the win by pinfall to make the score 24-15 in favor of B. U. with one match to go. In the final match, B. U. freshman Justin Blumenthal (Madison, Wisc.) won a close, 12-10, decision over Billy Ivatts to end the match at 27-15.
The Terriers travel to Providence, R. I. on Saturday, Jan. 18 to wrestle against Brown University. Match time is 12 p.m.
