Wrestling Falls At Drexel, 22-14

PHILADELPHIA—The Boston University wrestling team lost five of its last six matches at Drexel, dropping a 22-14 decision to the Dragons in a Colonial Athletic Association match on Friday, Jan. 31 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
B. U. (11-2, 7-2 CAA) went up, 7-0, as Rayes Gonzales won a major decision, 24-11, over Drexel's Brendan Mance at 157 and Leighton Brady, wrestling at 165, defeated Matt Brienza, 7-5.
Drexel's (11-7, 6-0 CAA) Carl Schmidt scored a fall over Ben Schilens at 174 to put the Dragons on the board. After Ed Strauss won a 14-5 decision over Pat Shufelt at 184, Drexel's Chris Jones, ranked #10 in the nation by Amateur Wresting News at 197 pounds, scored a takedown over the Terriers' Chad Grant with just over a minute left and hung on for a 9-7 decision to pull Drexel within two at 11-9.
Heavyweight Mike Carroll and freshman 125-pounder Zach Makovsky then scored decisions to give the Dragons a 15-11 advantage. A major decision loss by Jason Slutsky at 133 to Joe Cristaldi put Drexel up 19-11. Joey Rivera gave the Terriers a chance with a decision at 141 to make it 19-14, but Zac Johns fell, 4-0, to Mark Cartella at 149 to close out the victory for Drexel.
Carroll is the top-ranked heavyweight in the CAA and is now 100-41 for his career.
The Terriers next wrestle at Rutgers in Piscataway, N. J. on Saturday, Feb. 1. Match time is 12 p.m.
