Wrestling Falls At No. 14 Hofstra, 28-9

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Hofstra University won eight of 10 matches to post a 28-9 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Boston University on Thursday, Dec. 11.
Hofstra (2-1, 1-0 CAA), ranked 14th in the nation, extended its conference match winning streak to 27 dating back to the 1998-99 season.
B. U. (3-2, 1-1 CAA) got its only win of the night in at 141 pounds, as junior Joey Rivera (Stroudsburg, Pa.) defeated the Pride's John Manarte, 8-2 in the final match of the night. Sophomore Mike Galorenzo (Oradell, N. J.) recorded a forfeit win at 133 pounds.
In one of the more competitive matches of the night, Terrier senior Leighton Brady (Tulsa, Okla.) fell to Hofstra's Ralph Everett, 3-1, at 165 pounds. Everett, ranked 11th in the country at 165, recorded a match-deciding takedown with 20 seconds remaining in regulation in the victory. Brady came into the match 15th in the country.
B. U. junior Courtney Howard (Sitka, Alaska) took part in the most exciting match of the night. The heavyweight fell to Hofstra's Dan Garay, 7-5, in sudden-victory overtime. Garay took a 4-3 lead on a takedown with 31 seconds remaining in regulation. But Howard escaped to tie the match and send it into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, each wrestler recorded an escape in each of the following 30-second overtime periods sending the match to a final sudden victory period. Garay posted a takedown with 21 seconds remaining to grab the victory.
B. U. next wrestles in the Midlands and Wilkes Tournaments, which take place on Dec. 28 and 29.
