Wrestling Terriers Defeat Brown, Springfield College In Double-Dual

BOSTON - Boston University hosted Brown University and Springfield College in a double dual meet at Case Gym on Saturday, Jan. 17, and the Terriers came out with two victories. B. U. bested Brown, 24-12, while dispatching of Springfield College, 34-6.
In the third matchup, Brown (1-2) defeated Springfield College, 26-13.
Brown won the first two classes against the Terriers to go ahead 6-0, but juniors Joey Rivera (Stroudsburg, Pa.) at 141 pounds and Rayes Gonzales (Las Vegas, Nev.) at 149 pounds each won their matches, Gonzales by way of pinfall, to go ahead 9-6.
The Bears took two of the next three matches to tie the score at 12-12. Senior Leighton Brady (Tulsa, Okla.) won his match at 165 pounds. B. U. ended the Brown threat by taking the last three matches. Sophomore Tom Sforza (Lindenhurst, N. Y.) at 184 pounds, freshman John DaCruz (Ludlow, Mass.) at 197 pounds, and heavyweight Courtney Howard (Sitka, Alaska) each posted wins to provide the final 24-12 margin.
The Terriers (6-2, 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association) had little trouble with Division III Springfield College (9-3), winning 34-6. The Pride, ranked ninth in Division III, won matches at 165 and 184, but B. U. won the remaining eight contests.
Rivera, DaCruz, and Howard were the three Terriers who won two matches in the double dual.
Brown took charge in its win over Springfield College by winning five of the first six matches. Greg Pace (125 pounds), Dan Appello (133), and Sean Jenkins (174) each won two matches in the double dual.
B. U. next wrestles at the Colonial Athletic Association Duals on Jan. 23-24 in Fairfax, Va.
