Wrestling Falls To Hofstra, 36-9

BOSTON - The Boston University wrestling team opened its Colonial Athletic Association and dual-match season with a 36-9 loss to Hofstra on Saturday, Dec. 11 at Case Gym.
B.U. falls to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in CAA matches, while Hofstra improves its record to 2-1, 1-0 and extended its conference dual match undefeated streak to 36 (35-0-1).
Three of the match's weight classes were forfeited. B.U. earned six points at 285 and Hofstra earned forfeit wins and 12 points at 125 and 174.
Charles Griffin gave the Pride a 12-6 edge with a pin of sophomore Brett Frimer (Marboro, N.J.) at 133. Hofstra's Ricky LaForge followed with a tight 3-0 victory over senior captain Joey Rivera (Stroudsburg, Pa.) at 141 to push the lead to 15-6.
Senior captain Rayes Gonzales (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Hofstra's Jon Masa gave the Case Gym crowd an exciting match at 149, as Gonzales earned two points late in the final period to stratch out a 9-7 win, B.U.'s only non-forfeit win of the match. Gonzales' win made the score 15-9 in favor of the Pride.
James Strouse got Hofstra back on the winning track at 157, earning the first of three major decision victories for the Pride. His 14-4 win over junior Greg Politi (East Hanover, N.J.) made the score 19-9.
Mike Patrovich's 4-2 win over junior Zach Johns (Owings Mills, Md.) gave Hofstra a 22-9 advantage. After a B.U. forfeit at 184, the Pride racked up a pair of major decision wins to finish out the match.
Joe Rovelli (184) and Chris Skretkowicz (197) earned 8-0 wins over junior Tom Sforza (Lindenhursts, N.Y.) and sophomore John DaCruz (Ludlow, Mass.), respectively, making the final score 36-9 in favor of the Pride.
B.U. next competes on Dec. 28-29 when the Terriers send wrestlers to both the Midlands Championships in Ecvanston, Ill. and the Wilkes Open in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
