Four Wrestlers Compete At 2004 Wilkes Open

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Four Boston University wrestlers took part in the 72nd Wilkes Open Wrestling Tournament on Dec. 28. Sophomore Anthony Turili (North Kingston, R.I.), and juniors Jason Bakanowski (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Zach Johns (Owings Mills, Md.), and Tom Sforza (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) competed in the event.
Johns, competing at 165, lost his opening round match, 4-2, to Oklahoma's Jarrod King, but then ran off a string of four straight victories, including three consecutive victories by pinfall, in the consolation bracket. His day ended when Rutgers' Robert Kaiser pinned him. Johns went 4-2 on the day.
Bakanowski, wrestling unattached at 165, won his first two matches starting with a pin (4:47) of Lock Haven's Andrew Martin. He fell into the consolation bracket after a tight 1-0 loss to Rutgers' Joe Sacco, then fell, 1-0, to East Stroudsburg's Ron Saglimbene. He was 2-2.
Wrestling unattached at 184, Sforza also won both of his first two matches, advancing to a final four matchup against Maryland's Josh Haines, who defeated Sforza, 3-1. Haines would go on to win the title at 184.
Turili, competing at 149, lost both of his matches.
Boston University next wrestles as a team when it hosts Sacred Heart in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Saturday, Jan. 8. Start time at Case Gymnasium is 7 p.m.
