BOSTON - Sean Gray, a two-time All-American wrestler at Virginia Tech, has been named an assistant coach of the Boston University wrestling team, it was announced on Friday, July 30, by head coach Carl Adams.
Gray comes to B.U. after a successful one-year stint as the head wrestling coach at The Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. Gray guided Apprentice to a fourth-place finish nationally in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Tournament. For his efforts, he was voted the Mid-Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year and finished third in the national coaches' voting.
Gray graduated from Virginia Tech in 2003 as one of the most decorated wrestlers in Hokies' history. He finished his collegiate career as the school's all-time leader in career wins (133-19), career winning percentage (.850), career pins (45), and pins in a single season (15).
A stellar freshman season in 1997-98 saw Gray post a 32-8 record, win the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title at 134 pounds, and garner CAA Rookie of the Year honors. After redshirting the 1998-99 season, Gray returned to go 40-3 as a sophomore in 1999-2000, placing seventh at the NCAA Championship and earning his first of two All-America honors. A year later, Gray went 30-3 and wrestled to a sixth-place finish at the NCAAs, earning All-America recognition for the second straight season. It marked the first time in Virginia Tech history that a wrestler earned All-American status twice.
Gray was also a three-time Eastern Wrestling League champion, and finished his collegiate career undefeated in dual-meet competition. In 1999, he won the FILA Junior National Freestyle Championship and wrestled to a sixth-place finish at 138 pounds at the Junior World Championship in Sydney, Australia.
Gray was also recognized for his work in the classroom, as he earned the Virginia Tech Wrestling Academic Achievement Award after posting a 4.0 grade point average as a senior. The Blacksburg (Va.) Sports Club named Gray the Outstanding Male Athlete at Virginia Tech for 2001.
Gray's wrestling accolades started in high school, where he was a three-time Prep National Champion for Blair Academy of New Jersey.
Gray joins a Terrier program that finished the 2003-04 season with a 15-3 record and a third-place finish in the CAA. The Terriers sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Championship, marking the 23rd straight season that Adams had coached at least a pair of his charges at nationals.
