Terrier Wrestlers Fall At Drexel

PHILADELPHIA - Drexel's Zach Makovsky defeated Boston University's Brett Frimer at 133 to hand the Dragon's a 17-16 Colonial Athletic Association wrestling victory over the Terriers on Friday, Jan. 28.
B.U. (5-4, 4-3 America East) trailed, 14-6, after six matches, but got decisions by sophomore John DaCruz (Ludlow, Mass.) at 197 and senior Courtney Howard (Sitka, Alaska) at 285, and a 13-5 major decision win by junior Mike Galorenzo (Oradell, N.J.) at 125 to take a 16-14 lead heading into the final match of the day.
A Mokovsky takedown with 1:25 to go in the third period proved to be the match-winning points in a 5-3 win over Frimer at 133.
Senior Joey Rivera (Stroudsburg, Pa.) earned the Terriers' first win with a 4-3 decision at 141. DU won the next two matches to take a 7-3 lead. The matchup at 157 saw Terrier junior Justin Blumenthal (Madison, Wis.) fall, 9-8, in overtime. Blumenthal owned a 5-0 edge over The Dragon's Ryan Hluschak in the first period, but Hluschak managed to tie the match at 8-8 and send it to overtime, where he pulled out an escape in the third extra period to give the Dragons a 7-3 lead.
Junior Zach Johns (Owings Mills, Md.) defeated Billy Haydt, 2-0, at 165 to pull B.U. to within one at 7-6.
DU's Nick Kozar downed B.U. senior Warren Haines (Alexandria, Va.), 13-3, at 174 pounds to increase Drexel's advantage to 11-6. Junior Tom Sforza (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) followed with another overtime loss, this one to DU's Carl Schmidt at 184. After a scoreless sudden-victory period, giving Drexel its biggest lead of the night at 14-6.
The Terriers then muscled their way back into the match as DaCruz and Howard earned decisions. Galorenzo's major-decision, sealed with two near-fall points as time expired, gave the Terriers a 16-14 lead setting up Makovsky's last-bout heroics for Drexel.
