Terrier Wrestlers Down Sacred Heart, 23-15

BOSTON - Boston University defeated Sacred Heart, 23-15, in Colonial Athletic Association wrestling action at Case Gym on Saturday, Jan. 8. The Terriers raced to an early lead, helped by senior heavyweight Courtney Howard's (Sitka, Alaska) 5-2 win over defending CAA champion Payam Zarrinpour.
Howard's victory gave BU a 17-3 lead after six matches. A forfeit win at 133 earned the Terriers their final six points for a 23-6 lead, more than enough to seal the victory.
Five Terriers won their matches. Junior Justin Blumenthal (Madison, Wis.) started the match with a 21-9 major-decision victory at 157. Senior tri-captain Warren Haines won, 7-0, at 174 to make the score 7-3.
Junior Tom Sforza (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) followed with a 17-5 major decision win at 184 to push the B.U. advantage to 11-3. Sophomore John DaCruz (Ludlow, Mass.) made it three victories in a row with a 4-1 win at 197. Howard then put the Terriers in control with his victory over Zarrinpour.
The Terriers (1-1, 1-1 CAA) next wrestling at non-conference opponent Brown University on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m.
