November 12, 2005 | Men's Wrestling
BRISTOL, R.I. - Behind titles in six different weight classes, the Boston University wrestling team opened its season with a first-place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday.
In three weight classes, BU had two of its wrestlers reach the title match, so all six grapplers were named co-champions in their respective brackets.
Freshman Carlo Farrandino opened his collegiate career by earning a shared title at 141 with sophomore Joe Whitaker. Fellow freshmen Mike Roberts and James Connors also claimed titles at 149 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Senior Justin Blumenthal, who moved up to 157, captured the title in his bracket, while classmates Zach Johns and Jason Bakanowski, both newcomers to the 165-pound ranks, shared their bracket's title. Sophomores Chris Tripp and Jay Gorman both reached the 174-pound final.
The Terriers will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 20, when they compete at the Keystone Classic, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
