Wrestling Earns Fifth-Place Finish at Keystone Classic
November 20, 2005 | Men's Wrestling
PHILADELPHIA - Three individuals earned top-three finishes to help the Boston University wrestling team place fifth out of 10 teams at the Keystone Classic, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday at The Palestra. The Terriers were led by redshirt freshman Mike Roberts, who reached the 149-pound title match.
Penn claimed the team championship with 151 points, while Virginia (109.5), American (100.5) and Appalachian State (79.5) rounded out the top four. BU finished with 76.5 points.
Roberts opened the tournament with a pin in the fifth minute of his match with Brown's Mike Bloom. Two more wins placed him in the championship bout against American's Tom Kniezewski, where he dropped a 6-4 decision in the first sudden victory period.
After falling by a single point in the 141-pound semifinals to top-seeded Ceasar Grajalas of Penn, sophomore Joey Whitaker rallied to earn a third-place finish, capped by a victory over Duke's Antwone Floyd in the second tiebreaker. Also finishing third in his bracket was senior Justin Blumenthal at 157 pounds. Blumenthal and classmate Greg Politi both reached the third-place match and Blumenthal took the match due to a medical forfeit.
Senior Zach Johns was seeded fourth in the 165-pound bracket and reached the semifinals before falling 10-4 to top-seeded Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov from American. Johns went on to pin sixth-seeded Ryan Cunningham of Rider to reach the third-place match, where he suffered a pin by Damian Johnson of Virginia.
In the 141-pound consolation bracket, freshman Carlo Ferrandino pinned second-seeded Mark Savino of Brown before falling to Whitaker. A medical forfeit by Marcus Cox of Appalachain State enabled Ferrandino to take fifth place.
At the heavyweight ranks, two BU freshmen, Orey Hall and fourth-seeded James Connors, met in the wrestlebacks, where Hall earned a 9-4 decision and went on to finish sixth after a 6-0 setback in the fifth-place match against Penn's Jayson Bowlsby.
The Terriers will return to action in two weeks when they will compete in the Penn State Open on Sunday, Dec. 4.
