EVANSTON, Ill. - Sophomore Joey Whitaker and redshirt freshman Mike Roberts represented the Boston University wrestling team at the 43rd Midlands Championships, held on the campus of Northwestern University. Whitaker and Roberts earned a combined three wins at the prestigious two-day tournament.
In the 141-pound bracket, Whitaker dropped a 9-3 decision to fifth-seeded Cassio Pero of Illinois before posting an 8-4 victory over Casey Carrino of Eastern Illinois in the wrestlebacks. Whitaker later faced third-seeded Alex Tsirtsis (Iowa), who was upset in the round of 16. Tsirtsis posted a 9-1 major decision.
Roberts drew the top seed in the 149-pound bracket, as his opponent was former NCAA champion Cliff Moore. After falling 16-4 to Moore, Roberts turned in a pair of strong wins in the consolation round, posting a 9-6 triumph over North Central's Noah Fitzenreider before recording a 12-6 win against Brandon Doyle (Cal State Bakersfield). A 9-3 loss to Waldorf's Brad Stockton ended Roberts' run.
The Terriers will open up the dual portion of their schedule when they return to action on Friday, Jan. 13, at Sacred Heart. Last season, BU registered a 23-15 home victory over the Pioneers.
