Brower Tallies Double-Double As Terriers Down Stony Brook
February 16, 2005 | Men's Basketball
B.U. (19-5, 13-2 America East) won for the eighth straight time, holding Stony Brook to just 50 points and 33.3 percent shooting overall. It's the seventh time in their last eight outings that the Terriers have held their opponents to 55 points or less.
The Terriers jumped out to as much as a 12-point lead in the opening half on a transition layup by freshman guard Bryan Geffen (Bayside, N.Y.) after a steal by senior guard Chaz Carr (Manchester, Conn.). Stony Brook woke up from its early shooting woes to finish the half on a 10-2 run to cut the advantage to 25-21 at the half.
A Brower three-pointer at eight minutes into the second half pushed the B.U. advantage to 35-27. He hit another trey three minutes later to allow the Terriers to reclaim a 10-point lead at 41-31 with 8:49 to go. That lead would balloon to 14 points with just less than four minutes remaining on a Brower jumper to make it 48-34. A pair of Brower free throws with 2:38 on the clock made it 50-36.
Stony Brook then took to the three-point line in an attempt to make up the deficit as Bobby Santiago connected on a pair of long balls with in the final 1:15 to trim the Terrier lead to 54-48 with 33 seconds to go. Poor free throw shooting down the stretch allowed the Seawolves hope, but Brower finished the night with another pair of freebies to seal the victory.
Neither team shot the ball well. B.U. finished at 38 percent, making 19-of-50 shots, while Stony Brook made only 33.3 percent of its shots at 16-for-48.
It was Brower's first career double-double. He was joined in double figures by Carr, who finished with 14 points. Santiago's 16 points led Stony Brook.
B.U. next welcomes Northeastern to Agganis Arena in a men's and women's hoops doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 20. The women tip off at 1 p.m., while the men are set to go at 4 p.m. Both games will be televised by NESN.
