Wrestling Wins Home Opener Versus Springfield, 37-14

BOSTON - The Boston University wrestling team erased an 8-0 deficit to post a convincing 37-14 home-opening victory over Springfield College on Wednesday evening at Case Gym. With their first win of the season, the Terriers improved to 1-3, while the Pride fell to 3-6. Of the seven matches won by BU, four came by way of pins, while another was a major decision.
After BU freshman Josh Statum (Pelham, Ala.) was edged out, 7-6, in the 125-lb. weight class and fellow rookie Bryan Matsuura (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) dropped a major decision at 133 lbs., the Terriers bounced back with six consecutive victories.
At 141-lbs., sophomore Joe Whitaker (Queensbury, N.Y.) got things going for BU with a pin at 6:20 before the Terriers took the lead for good with redshirt freshman Mike Roberts' 10-7 decision in the 149-lb. match.
Furthering the BU lead, senior Justin Blumenthal (Madison, Wis.) posted a major decision, 12-4, at 157-lbs., followed by pins from senior Zach Johns (Baltimore, Md.) at 1:51, redshirt freshman Chris Tripp (Cleveland, Ohio) at 1:08 and senior Tom Sforza (Lindenhurst, N.Y) at a mere :46, in the 165-, 174- and 184-lb. classes, respectively.
With the commanding 31-8 lead, freshman Elijah Vidal (New York, N.Y.) was pinned at 197-lbs. before freshman James Connors (Mansfield, Mass.) won by forfeit in the heavyweight division for the final 37-14 score.
The Terriers hit the road for the CAA Duals on Friday and Saturday.
