Wrestling Drops CAA Home Opener to Drexel, 24-16

BOSTON - After spotting Drexel 15 points through four matches, the Boston University wrestling team battled back, winning four of the final six bouts, but fell short by a score of 24-16 in its conference home opener on Friday night at Case Gym. Senior Zach Johns earned his team-leading fifth pin of the season.
The Terriers fell to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in CAA duals, while Drexel improved to 15-8, 7-3.
After the Dragons took the first three matches by decision to take an early 9-0 lead, BU was able to fill the 133-pound slot and the ensuing forfeit created a 15-0 deficit.
Sophomore Joe Whitaker got BU on the board with a hard-fought 9-7 victory over Zach Makovsky in the 141-pound match. Redshirt freshman Mike Roberts followed that up with a narrow win of his own, edging Chris Renninger, 9-7, to cut the home squad's deficit to 15-6.
Drexel recaptured its 15-point cushion when Ryan Hlushchak pinned freshman Mike Cubillos, who was wrestling up two weight classes, with 11 seconds left in the opening period at 157 pounds.
BU quickly had an answer to the pin, as Johns turned a reversal in the early stages of the second period into a fall at the 3:44 mark in his 165-pound match against Scott Hunter.
However, the Dragons sealed their victory when junior Nick Kozar posted a 5-1 decision over BU senior Chris Tripp at 174 to give the visitors a 24-12 advantage.
The Terriers closed out the match on a winning note, as senior Tom Sforza recorded two takedowns in each of the first two periods before adding a five-point move early in the final period en route to a 17-5 major decision at 184.
BU will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, when it welcomes Rutgers to Case Gym for a dual beginning at noon.
