Ferrandino, Statum Help Wrestling Push Past Rutgers, 27-20

BOSTON - On the backend of back-to-back home duals, the Boston University wrestling team finishes up its long weekend with a 27-20 victory over visiting Rutgers on Saturday in Case Gym. Freshmen Josh Statum and Carlo Ferrandino each earned pins to help the Terriers improve their record to 4-7 on the year.
The match was exciting throughout, as the lead changed hands on five occasions. After Rutgers used a pin by Jamie Lijo at 157 to take a 20-18 lead through eight bouts, senior Zach Johns helped the Terriers regain the lead with a 4-0 decision at 165. Rutgers forfeited the final match, resulting in the 27-20 final.
The match opened at 184, where freshman Elijah Vidal suffered a 19-4 technical fall against Rudy Medini. Thee Terriers picked up wins in the next two matches, as senior Tom Sforza posted a 3-2 win at 197 and James Connors started and ended his heavyweight strong, earning a 7-6 win to give BU a 6-5 lead.
At 125, Statum erased a 6-0 deficit before rally for a pin against Ricky Ringel at the 4:14 mark of the match. After BU forfeited at 133, sophomore Joe Whitaker fell short in his match at 141, losing 6-0. Ferrandino got his first start at 149 this year and came out strong, earning a pin near the end of the second period, giving BU a 12-3 advantage. The Scarlet Knights fell to 7-6 with the loss.
In the 157 bout, redshirt freshman Mike Roberts wrestled up from his usual weight and was pinned 45 seconds into the opening period. BU quickly answered with a win at the 165 weight before Johns gave BU the lead for good.
Boston University returns to action on Feb. 4 when it travels to East Stroudsburg, Pa., for a tri-match against Delaware Valley and East Stroudsburg.
