October 27, 2006 | Men's Wrestling
BOSTON - Boston University assistant wrestling coach Sean Gray has been selected for entry into the Eastern Wrestling League Hall of Fame, as announced this month by the league committee. A former two-time All-America wrestler at Virginia Tech, Gray is entering his third season as an assistant for the Terriers under head coach Carl Adams.
Gray graduated from Virginia Tech in 2003 as one of the most decorated wrestlers in Hokies’ history. He finished his collegiate career as the school’s all-time leader in wins (133-19), winning percentage (.850), pins (45), and pins in a single season (15).
A stellar freshman season in 1997-98 saw Gray post a 32-8 record, win the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title at 134 pounds, and garner CAA Rookie of the Year honors. After redshirting the 1998-99 season, Gray returned to go 40-3 as a sophomore in 1999-2000, placing seventh at the NCAA Championships and earning his first of two All-America honors. A year later, Gray went 30-3 and wrestled to a sixth-place finish at the NCAAs, earning All-America recognition for the second straight season. It marked the first time in Virginia Tech history that a wrestler earned All-American status twice.
Gray was also a three-time EWL champion and he finished his collegiate career undefeated in conference dual-meet competition. In 1999, he won the FILA Junior National Freestyle Championship and wrestled to a sixth-place finish at 138 pounds at the Junior World Championship in Sydney, Australia.
Gray will be formally inducted at a ceremony prior to the EWL finals on March 4, 2007, at Cleveland State University.
