EVANSTON, Ill. - Sophomore Mike Roberts and junior Joey Whittaker represented the Boston University wrestling team at the 2006 Midlands Championships at Northwestern University on Dec. 29-20. Roberts posted wins in four of his six matches and was among the final 12 wrestlers in the 149-pound bracket before bowing out in the wrestlebacks.
Roberts opened with a 6-2 victory over Iowa's Brett Stedman before edging Brandon Carter of Central Michigan, 7-5, to advance to the round of 16. In an attempt to reach the quarterfinals, Roberts faced a tough opponent in second-seeded Matt Coughlin of Indiana. Coughlin proved to be too much in a 10-1 major decision.
In the wrestlebacks, Roberts closed the day with a pair of wins, posting a 7-3 win over Northwestern's Vince Colletti before recording a 6-3 decison over Steven Adamcsik of Rutgers. On Saturday, Roberts gave top-seeded J.P. O'Connor of Harvard a good match before falling by a score of 3-1.
In the 133-pound bracket, Whittaker opened against fourth-seeded Andrae Hernandez of Indiana and lost, 13-1. In the consolation bracket, Whittaker was eliminated with a narrow 5-4 loss to Mike Ryan of Harper College.
With the tournament portion of their schedule complete, the Terriers will return to action in their dual opener on Friday, Jan. 12, when they play host to Sacred Heart at 7 p.m.
