Wrestling Competes at Penn State Open

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Boston University wrestling team participated in one of the largest tournaments of the year on Sunday, sending 14 grapplers to the Penn State Open. Over 600 wrestlers from across the country participated in the one-day tournament. Sophomore Mike Roberts turned in an eighth-place finish in the 149-pound bracket.
Roberts won his first three matches to advance to the quarterfinal round, but suffered a tough 3-1 sudden-victory loss to VMI's Sam Alvarenga. After rebounding with a victory in the consolation round, Roberts fell 6-3 to Kaylen Baxter of Old Dominion to fall into the eighth-place match, where he dropped a 6-3 bout to Navy's Glen Shober.
Freshman Abbie Rush (125), junior Joey Whitaker (133) and sophomore Carlo Ferrandino (141) each earned three victories on the day for the Terriers.
After taking a break from competition to wrap up the semester, the Terriers will return to action on Dec. 28-29 when they send wrestlers to both the Midlands and the Wilkes Open.
