BOSTON - The Boston University swimming and diving teams will open their 2007-08 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 13 at UMass. Last season, the women's squad defeated the Minutewomen, 133-110, while the men dropped a 127.5-97.5 decision. On the women's side, BU returns senior Sam Lupinetti, junior Christina Ruggiero and school-record holder Eve Kinsella. For the men, the Terriers will be led by senior Gordon Allan and sophomores Arik Seiler and John Passaro.
The women's team finished off its 2006-07 season with a second-place finish at the America East championships, with standout performances from Ruggiero (Wilmington, Del.) in the 1650 freestyle and Kinsella (Freehold, N.J.) in the 100 free. Kinsella earned two individual crowns in the meet (100 free, 200 free) and broke two individual school records (200 free, 200 IM). Lupinetti (Warwick, N.Y.) lowered her collegiate bests in the 100 free and 200 free in 2006-07. She also swam a personal best in the 500 free with a time of 5:29.75. Against Syracuse on Jan. 20, she lowered her collegiate best in the 1,000 free by over 22 seconds when she touched the wall in 11 minutes, 22.25 seconds.
On the men's side, Allan (Colorado Springs, Colo.) swam a lifetime best in the 200 back (2:05.71) at the America East Championships, despite being sidelined just a month earlier with an injury. He also turned in a career-best performance at the Terrier Invitational in the 50 free (23.48). Seiler (Portland, Maine) made an immediate impact on the team in his freshman season establishing himself as one of its top performers. He swam lifetime bests in the 100 free (46.85), 200 free (1:41.46) and 500 free (4:32.81) at the conference championships and the 200 IM (1:57.21) against Boston College on Jan. 23. Passaro (Oakland, N.J) broke the two-minute mark in the 200 IM at the AE Championships, swimming to a 1:59.68 time and 14th-place finish. He lowered his lifetime best by seven seconds in the 400 IM at the conference championships with a time of 4:11.91 and fifth-place finish, while placing fourth in the 200 fly with a personal-best time of 1:56.85.
Following tomorrow's meet BU will return to Boston to host Colgate on Oct. 21 at 1:30.
