PHILADELPHIA - The Boston University wrestling team competed in its first tournament of the season on Sunday, as four Terriers placed in their respective brackets at the Keystone Open, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Sophomore A.J. Detwiler finished second at 165, while junior Mike Roberts (149) and freshman John Hall (197) each placed fourth. Sophomore C.J. Inglin came in sixth in the 165 bracket.
The Terriers earned 50 points on the day to finish ninth in the 10-team field. Tennessee-Chattanooga captured the team title with 140.5 points, while the host Quakers came in second with 125.5. Appalachian State (80.5) rounded out the top three.
Detwiler, who was seeded second, began his day by pinning VMI's Jayme Gordon in two minutes, 20 seconds. He posted a 10-5 victory over UTC's Nick Davis before falling by technical fall (19-4, 7:00) to American's Mike Cannon in the championship.
After falling, 3-1, to Penn's Cesar Grajales in the 149 quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded Roberts rallied with three straight consolation wins before coming up just short (2-1) in a rematch with Grajales that went to an overtime tiebreaker in the third-place match.
Roberts opened with a fall against Brown's Stephen DeLorenzo in 3:42. In the wrestlebacks, he defeated VMI's John Hall (12-5) and Mercyhurst's Brian Pogel (13-6) and Don Cummings (10-6).
Freshman John Hall, whose impressive early-season progress earned him the No. 4 seed in the 197 bracket, opened his day with an 8-0 major decision against Arizona State's Thor Moen. He went on edge Brown's Branden Stearns, 3-2, in the quarterfinals before falling top-seeded Matt Koz (Tenn.-Chatt.) in the semifinals, 18-6. A tight 7-6 win over Mercyhurst's Trevor Gallo earned him a spot in the third-place match, where Stearns came through in a rematch, 8-5.
Inglin gave the Terriers two place-winners in the 165 bracket, going 3-3 on the day to finish in sixth place. He opened with an 8-6 win over Appalachian State's Brett Houghton before being knocked down to the consolations with a 10-4 loss to third-seeded Nick Davis of UTC. Wins over Brown's Kasey McCurdy (4-2) and VMI's Gordon (17-5) advanced him to the wrestleback semifinals against fourth-seeded Hudson Harrison (Mercyhurst), who emerged with a 4-1 victory. In the fifth-place match, Inglin fell to Tommy Hutchinson (App. State), 4-1.
Freshman Alex Cournoyer (133), sophomore Abbie Rush (133), junior Carlo Ferrandino (157) all earned two wins on the day. Promising freshman Fred Santiate had to withdraw after an injury during his first match of the day - a 6-3 loss to Brown's Greg Einfrank.
The Terriers will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 2, when they compete in the Penn State Open.
