Roberts Comes Up Short in NCAA Consolations
March 16, 2007 | Men's Wrestling
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Despite a valiant effort in the late stages of regulation, sophomore Mike Roberts had his run in the NCAA Wrestling Championships come to a close on Friday morning with a 10-6 loss to Penn State's Dan Valliamont in the 149-pound consolation bracket. Roberts closes his season with a record of 27-13.
Trailing 9-1, Roberts turned in a five-point move, securing a takedown before putting Valliamont to his back for a three-point near fall in the closing seconds of the third. Time ran out, however, before Roberts could seal a pin.
Valliamont opened the scoring with a first-period takedown before jumping out to a 6-1 lead by the end of the second following another takedown and a near fall. The Penn State grappler opened the third with a takedown and appeared to be in control before Roberts made things interesting late.
Roberts posted a 1-2 record over the two days at his first appearance at the NCAA Championships and will return next season with the rest of the Terriers' nine other starters for what promises to be an exciting 2007-08 campaign.
