BOSTON - Tom Varnum, most recently the men’s golf coach at Tyngsborough High School, has been appointed head coach of the Boston University women’s golf team, as announced on Wednesday by director of athletics Mike Lynch. Varnum joins the BU athletics program with a proven record of success, having coached Tyngsborough to three league championships.
Varnum inherits a Terrier squad that has captured the America East title in each of the past two seasons. He replaces Cammie Landry, who served as the team’s coach for the past 10 years before retiring this summer.
“We’re excited to welcome Tom to our coaching staff,” said Lynch. “I’m confident that he will help to continue the recent success our women’s golf program has enjoyed over the past few seasons.”
Tyngsborough has been a strong program over the past seven years with Varnum at the helm, earning a spot in the state sectional tournament six times while also capturing the trio of league titles. Varnum has performed double duty with his coaching responsibilities, also leading the Lowell Catholic High School women’s varsity basketball team for the past four seasons. In addition to his coaching duties at Tyngsborough, Varnum has taught English and journalism for the past 13 years at the high school.
Before his time at Tyngsborough, Varnum was a residence hall director at Providence College, Drexel University and Fordham University. During his stay at Fordham, Varnum earned his master’s degree in English literature.
Varnum was a 1989 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a double major in English and communications. He and his wife, LeeAnn, reside in Lowell with their son, Harris.
