Wrestling Suffers Trio of Losses at CAA Duals

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Boston University wrestling team put forth a strong effort but came up short against all three of its opponents on the final day of the Colonial Athletic Association Duals, held at George Mason. The Terriers were six points shy (24-18) of upsetting No. 22 Old Dominion and also lost to No. 12 Hofstra (38-7) and the host Patriots (25-13).
BU now stands at 4-4 on the year and 2-4 against CAA opponents.
Junior Mike Roberts (149) extended his win streak to 11 matches with victories against all three of his opponents on Saturday. Ranked as high as ninth in the country, Roberts posted a convincing 16-5 major decision against Hofstra's Jeff Rotella and topped No. 17 Kaylen Baxter of Old Dominion, 5-3. He finished the day by edging Mason's Brandon Bucher, 7-6.
Senior Joe Whitaker (141), junior Carlo Ferrandino (157) and sophomore A.J. Detwiler (165) each earned two wins on the day.
Ferrandino posted a 7-5 victory over Hofstra's Anthony Tortora and also edged Jimmy Kaden of George Mason, 6-5. After posting a 4-3 win over Old Dominion's Ryan Williams, Whitaker closed his day with a 5-2 triumph over Mason's Will Powars. Detwiler provided four points for the Terriers against the Patriots with a 17-7 major decision over Andrew Rock and also registered a 15-9 win against Chris Brown of Old Dominon.
Sophomore C.J. Inglin and junior Jim Connors aided BU's upset bid against Old Dominion, as Inglin wrestled up a class at 174 and pinned Nick Pullano at 2:19 and Connors recorded a 4-2 win against Roy Dragon at 285.
BU will return to action on Friday, Jan. 25, in its home opener against Drexel. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m.
