Wrestling Shuts Out Delaware State, Drops Tight Battle With Rutgers

BOSTON - The Boston University wrestling team split a home tri-meet on Saturday, dropping a tight 22-19 battle with Rutgers before posting a 42-0 shutout victory against Delaware State. The Terriers now stand at 5-6 on the season.
The Terriers won five of the nine contested matches against the Scarlet Knights and held a 19-16 edge, but were unable to overcome their forfeit at the 125-pound match.
BU opened the dual with three straight wins, as Abbie Rush earned a 6-3 decision over Dan Hilt at 133 before senior Joe Whitaker pinned Paul Grogan at 4:03 of their 141-pound bout. Junior Mike Roberts completed the early run with an 8-4 decision at 149 against Jack Barrett.
Rutgers responded with four consecutive wins to take a 16-12 lead before John Hall got the Terriers within a point with a hard-fought 9-6 victory over Lamar Brown at 197. At 285, junior Jim Connors posted a 15-3 major decision over D.J. Russo to give the Terriers a 19-16 lead, but the forfeited 125-pound match was the last of the day, resulting in the 22-19 win for Rutgers.
Delaware State only filled six weight classes and the Terriers came out on top in all of them. Rush kicked things off with a pin halfway through the first period of his match with Tod Bromall followed by three consecutive forfeits by the Hornets resulting in a 24-0 lead.
Sophomore A.J. Detwiler kept thing going for BU with a 19-10 major decision against Brandon Brunce at 165 and classmate C.J. Inglin followed with a tight 4-2 win over Kyle Skinner at 174. Senior Jay Gorman made an appearance at 184 and came away with a 6-1 win against Derek Loper. Hall and Connors ensured the shutout by each posting a major decision.
The Terriers will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30, when they host Springfield College at the Track & Tennis Center beginning at 7 p.m.
