CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University wrestling team grappled to a 21-21 tie with cross-town rival Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Malkin Gym. Only seven matches were contested on the day, as injuries on both sides caused three forfeits in the lower weights. The Terriers now stand at 6-6-1 on the year.
The match started at 141, which was one of three forfeits on the day, as Harvard had injuries at 133 and 141 and the Terriers had to give up six points at 125. With Harvard leading 15-12 entering the last contested match at 285, junior Jim Connors earned a 6-3 victory for BU to ensure the tie.
The featured match of the afternoon was at 149, as junior Mike Roberts, who is ranked as high as ninth in the country, faced third-ranked J.P. O'Connor. Roberts earned the lone takedown of the match in the middle period, but was done in by a controversial technical point for pushing O'Connor off the mat. With the match tied at 2-2 to open the third, O'Connor earned an escape and held off Roberts for a 3-2 final.
Sophomore A.J. Detwiler was in control from the start against Patrick Ziemnik at 174 and went to earn a 17-8 major decision, helping the Terriers take a 10-9 lead halfway through the dual.
In what was a hotly-contested battle at 197, freshman John Hall secured a sudden-victory takedown to record a 4-2 victory over Jonathan Butler. However, the referee ruled that the way Hall tossed his headgear following his win was enough to warrant an unsportsmanlike conduct call. Because the BU bench had been warned earlier in the match following the technical call on Roberts, a point was deducted from the team total.
Making just his second dual appearance of the season, junior Mike Cubillos was edged, 3-1, by Bobby Latessa at 157. Sophomore C.J. Inglin dropped an 8-5 decision to Matt Button at 165 and junior Eli Vidal was pinned in the first minute of his 184-pound bout versus Fred Rowsey.
The Terriers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 8, when they visit Brown for a 1 p.m. dual.
