ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Mike Roberts came out on the losing end of both of his matches on Thursday in the 149-pound bracket of the 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships, held at the Scottrade Center. He finishes the season with a record of 28-11.
Roberts opened the tournament against seventh-seeded Darrion Caldwell of N.C. State and was pinned at the 2:26 mark. Earlier this season, it was Roberts who earned a fall in the closing seconds of his match with Caldwell at the Southern Scuffle.
In the consolation round, Roberts met 10th-seeded Scott Ervin of Appalachian State. Ervin proved to be a strong opponent, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first period before using a trio of near falls in the third to come away with a 14-0 major decision and eliminate Roberts from the tournament.
Roberts, who was making his second consecutive appearance in the national tournament, will lead a talented group of returners for the Terriers heading into the 2008-09 season.
