Whitaker, Roberts Advance to CAA Semifinals

Senior Joey Whitaker (141) and junior Mike Roberts (149) posted quarterfinal victories on Friday at the first day of competition at the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestling Championships, held at Hofstra University. All nine Terriers in the competition are alive in their respective brackets. BU posted eight points on day one and stands in seventh place.
Whitaker, seeded fifth at 141, pulled off a mild upset of No. 4 Anwar Goeres (Binghamton), 7-3, to advance to the semifinals. On Saturday, Whitaker will have the tough task of wrestling top-seeded and second-ranked Charles Griffin of Hofstra.
Roberts, the defending champion and fourth seed at 149, posted a 12-8 victory against George Mason's Brandon Bucher. He will face unseeded Anthony Priore of Sacred Heart in the semifinals.
At 133, sophomore Abbie Rush fell to Old Dominion's Ryan Hutter by a 20-9 major decision. Junior Carlo Ferrandino was pinned in his 157 quarterfinal against Drexel's Ryan Hluschak but earned a 6-2 win in the first round of consolations against Sacred Heart's Tom Sullivan.
Sophomore A.J. Detwiler, the No. 4 seed at 165, suffered a tough 8-6 sudden-victory loss against No. 5 Billy Haydt of Drexel. Classmate C.J. Inglin, who is also seeded fourth at 174, lost to fifth-seeded Nick Pullano (Old Dominion), 12-4.
At 184, sophomore Alex Brown was pinned in his quarterfinal match with top-seeded Doug Umbehauer of Rider.
Freshman John Hall, seeded fifth at 197, pinned Parker Burns of Campbell in his preliminary-round match before losing, 10-1, to fourth-seeded David Mendoza (Old Dominion).
Junior Jim Connors, who came in as the fifth seed at 285, dropped a 15-5 major decision against No. 4 Tom Daddino of Hofstra.
