BOSTON - Head coach Carl Adams and the Boston University wrestling team will welcome six student-athletes to the program for the upcoming 2008-09 season. Kendall Albert, Brad Castronovo, Daniel Chow, Ryan Dowd, Hunter Meys and Andrew Swank comprise this season's recruiting class, a group from across the country that between them has won seven high school state titles.
"This is a very talented class that will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact in our lineup," said Adams, entering his 28th season as the Terriers' head coach. "We're looking forward to welcoming this group to our team."
Meys will join the Terriers after a standout career at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, N.Y. A two-time state champion, Meys finished his career with a record of 256-9, including 216 pins to break the national high school record. He finished the last two years of his high school career undefeated and had a string of 46 pins in a row.
Albert, a Lawrenceville, Ga., native, won two state championships at Peachtree Ridge High School and posted a career record of 234-9. In his sophomore season, Albert went a perfect 55-0, capturing the state title as well as finishing first at the Brute Nationals. He has finished among the top three in the state tournament each of the last four years.
Dowd, of Livingston, N.J., captained his high school squad at St. Peter's Prep. A two-time qualifier for the New Jersey state tournament, Dowd earned first-team all-county accolades from the Jersey Journal, first-team All-Hudson honors from the Star Ledger and all-state honorable mention.
Swank, a Richfield, Ohio, native, comes to BU from the University School, where he was a sectional champion last season as well as an alternate in the Ohio state tournament. As a junior, Swank was a national qualifier in Greco-Roman wrestling and as a sophomore, he qualified for the cadet state tournaments in both Greco-Roman and freestyle.
Castronovo will be returning to the mat after sitting out his senior season in high school with a foot injury. In his junior year at Montgomery High School, the Belle Mead, N.J., native was a Princeton Packet first-team all-area selection and was honored with the team's sportsmanship award.
Chow was a three-time state Hawaii state wrestling champion at Punahou School in Honolulu, captaining his squad to team state titles in his final two seasons. Also a judo standout, Chow has captured three state championships in that discipline as well and competed in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials.
