GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Boston University wrestling team competed at the 2009 Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30 at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. Sophomore Fred Santaite reached the quarterfinal round of the 133-pound bracket and freshman Nestor Taffur picked up a pair of wins at 149 pounds.
Santaite, who moved up to 133 from 125 for the tournament, won his first two matches, including a 9-0 victory over George Mason's Brian Wright to reach the quarterfinal round, where he was pinned by Ohio's Kyle Ciccarello.
After dropping his first match on Tuesday, Taffur rebounded with a pair of wins in the consolation bracket. The first of his two triumphs came via a third-period pin against Virginia's Shawn Harris.
Sophomores Ryan Dowd (125) and Matt Morgenstern (149), freshmen Kyle Czarnecki (165) and Nate Lavallee (285) and junior Brock Mantella (184) eached recorded one victory in the two-day tournament.
The Terriers compiled 10 points in the tournament to finish 28th among the 33 competing teams.
BU will return to its dual schedule on Sunday, Jan. 10, when it visits Army to take on the Black Knights in addition to facing Rutgers and Kings Point.
