BOSTON - It came down to the very last race, however, the Boston University men's swimming and diving team came out the victor as it defeated rival Massachusetts, 154-146, on Sunday afternoon at Competition Pool. The 400-free relay team won by four seconds in the final event to secure the victory.
BU won nine races, including two relays, to edge the Minutemen by eight points. The 200-yard medley relay teams went 1-2 to start the day off right as senior Bryon Kallert led off the winning team, followed by classmates Kyle Ernst and Matt Rickett and junior Jackson Hill. The team finished the race in 1:33.91.
Freshman Nik Astashinsky won two events and placed second in a third race to highlight an impressive day for the freshman class. Astashinsky won the 100 back in 51.96, the 200 back in 1:53.34) and placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.81. Another standout rookie was Jeff Thomas, who won the 200 fly in 1:55.85.
Ernst - one of this year's captains - won two individual races, beginning with the 100 breast (58.01) and he went on to win the 200 breast in 2:11.10. Right there with Ernst was freshman Andrew Guinther won placed second to Ernst in both races with times of 58.94 and 2:12.31, respectively.
In the sprints, Kempf won the 50 free (21.64), while Rickett and Kempf went 1-2 in the 100 fly with times of 51.44 and 52.81.
In the diving events, senior Tanner Knorr places second on the 1M (278.70) and third on the 3M (230.93).
With the meet on the line, the 400-free relay team of Kempf, Rickett, Kallert and Hill came through with a winning time of 3:08.10.
BU will return to the water on Saturday (Oct. 23) when it hosts Bryant and Maine at 1:30 p.m.
