BOSTON - Highlighted by six games at Agganis Arena, an invitation to the NIT Season Tip-Off and a conference game at Madison Square Garden, the America East's preseason No. 1 Boston University men's basketball team's complete schedule for 2010-11 has been announced by second-year head coach Patrick Chambers.
In total, the 2010 CBI semifinalist and America East Championship runner-up Terriers will face off against at least eight postseason teams, including a home game against Cornell and visit to Kentucky, the team that coincidentally eliminated the Big Red to advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. Three of the six scheduled games at Agganis will come against America East foes, beginning with Binghamton on Jan. 26.
For the first time in over 60 years, BU opens the season with crosstown rival Northeastern on Nov. 12 at Matthews Arena and will then head to NIT Tip-Off East Region host Villanova for a Nov. 16 first-round match-up with George Washington. The Terriers will then face the Wildcats or Marist the following day.
On Friday, Nov. 19, they host Marist at Case Gymnasium and then depending on how they fare earlier in the week will complete the NIT schedule on Nov. 22-23 at a site to be determined or on Nov. 24-26 at Madison Square Garden.
After hosting Cornell at The Roof on Nov. 27, BU hits the road to Kentucky (Nov. 30) and then Bucknell (Dec. 4) before facing La Salle at Agganis Arena on Dec. 9.
Remaining in the city, the Terriers next play at Harvard (Dec. 11) and then host Saint Joseph's at Agganis (Dec. 21) and Northeast Conference regular season champion Quinnipiac at The Roof (Dec. 29). They end the year at Massachusetts on Dec. 31 in their fourth meeting of the season against an Atlantic-10 opponent.
BU kicks off the conference schedule and the new year at Maine (Jan. 2), recipient of one first-place vote in the America East preseason poll. The Terriers then return to Case to host New Hampshire (Jan. 4) and defending league champion Vermont (Jan. 9).
Three of the next four games will be on the road, including visits to Albany (Jan. 15), UMBC (Jan. 17) and Hartford (Jan. 22). Before facing off against the Hawks though, the Terriers will host Stony Brook at the Roof on. Jan. 20 in the first meeting since last season's thrilling AE semifinal match-up that saw BU eliminate the regular season champion Seawolves, 70-63.
After playing four games in eight days, the Terriers will play in the second contest of a BU basketball doubleheader with women's basketball at Agganis Arena against Binghamton (Jan. 26). They then take a quick trip over to UNH (Jan. 29) before returning to Agganis on Feb. 1 against Maine.
The following two games will take place in New York, beginning first at Stony Brook on Feb. 4. Then on Feb. 10, the Terriers and Albany will play in the first-ever America East contest at Madison Square Garden following the UConn/St. John's game.
After the late night game against the Great Danes, BU will return home for a three-game stretch, hosting Hartford (Feb. 12) at Case Gym and UMBC (Feb. 15) at Agganis. On Feb. 19, the Terriers will stay at Agganis and honor lone senior John Holland before making their fourth appearance in the ESPN BracketBusters.
Hitting the road again, they will play at Binghamton on Feb. 24 and then for the first time ever conclude the regular season with rival Vermont (Feb. 27) in a contest that could hold serious implications for tournament seeding.
Combined with the women's tournament for the second consecutive year, the 2011 America East Championship will be held at Hartford's Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion. Action will tip off on March 3 with play continuing through March 6. The highest seeds remaining in both the men's and women's tournament will host the championship games with the men's title game on Saturday, March 12 and the women's later in the evening.
BU will enter the program's 102nd season featuring three starters from last year's squad that finished with a record of 21-14 and 11-5 in league play. Leading the way will be two-time All-America East First Team honoree John Holland along with junior Jake O'Brien (third-team all-conference) and a seven-member freshman class.
