After battling through injuries ever since arriving on campus in 2007, Fred Santaite of the Boston University wrestling team has reached the national tournament, as the sophomore 125-pounder will make his debut at the NCAA Championships on Thursday (March 18) at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.
Santaite, who qualified for the NCAAs thanks to his second-place finish at the CAA Championships, will face Ohio State's Nikko Triggas in Thursday morning's opening round. If he wins, he would take on the winner of the Troy Nickerson (Cornell)/Allen Bartelli (Boise St.) match. Nickerson is the No. 2 seed in the bracket and the defending national champion.
Santaite started the year at 125 before moving to 133 and then returning to 125 the final weekend of the dual season. He enters the NCAA tournament with 18-9 overall record for the year (9-3 at 125, 9-6 at 133) with four pins and seven major decisions. Eight of his nine losses have been decided by two points or fewer and he has an 11-3 record over his last 14 matches.
