On Thursday night against Stony Brook, fans and I will have the chance to watch John Holland continue his march to 2,000 points. The senior has 1,920 and only needs 80 more to reach the milestone.
Check out this article from BU Today to learn more about what makes him so successful on the offensive end.
Now for those who may not follow basketball closely, let me put this in the proper perspective.
The basketball program is in its 102nd season. Thanks to junior Jake O'Brien, the team now has 31 players who have recorded at least 1,000 points.
Now how many of them have reached 1,500? Seven. 1,800? Four. 2,000? One.
Named one of America East's top five players each of his four seasons, Tunji Awojobi finished with 2,308 points. When he graduated, he was only one of five players in the history of NCAA Division I basketball to record at least 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocks.
Only 12 players since the America East started in 1979 have recorded 2,000. Even for the major conferences, it's a rare moment. Duke has the record with 11 players and the next program on the list has just seven.
What makes Holland special is he's a scorer from all areas of the court. He ranks second all-time at BU in 3-pointers and can also dunk with the best of them. Of course, he helps on the defensive end and currently ranks third all-time in steals.
Now he would be the first to say that he would gladly give up the chance to reach the mark if it meant winning an America East title.
He's a special player and a great guy, so please join me in rooting for him to get both.
Until next time...
