
Men's Swimming Places Third at Terrier Invitational

BOSTON - The Boston University men's swimming team placed third out of eight teams at the Terrier Invitational, which wrapped up on Sunday at the Competition Pool. The three-day meet was the largest ever hosted at BU.
The Terriers compiled 623.5 points over the three days to finish in third. Yale (800.5) won the competition and Boston College (712) placed second.
Senior Daniel Kempf was BU's top performer at the meet, finishing first in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 21.14 and 45.99, respectively, while also putting together a third-place effort in the 100 butterfly (50.33).
Freshman Connor Stuewe was impressive as well, touching the wall first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 149.96 in addition to a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke (51.34) and a seventh-place showing in the 200 freestyle (142.76).
Stuewe and Kempf swam the last two legs of BU's first-place 400 freestyle relay, which included senior Justin Gilmartin and freshman Cole Puchi and closed out the meet on with a winning time of 3:03.51. BU's 200 freestyle relay team of Gilmartin, Kemp, Puchi and Jackson Hill also finished first with a time of 1:22.91
Another strong relay showing came in the 400 medley, as Stuewe, Andrew Guinther, Kempf and Gilmartin turned in a time of 3:23.73 to finish second behind Yale.
Three Terriers earned individual second-place finishes. Sophomore Nik Astashinksy finished a half-second behind Stuewe in the 200 backstroke at 1:50.46, Puchi was just six tenths of a second behind Kempf in the 100 freestyle (46.05) and sophomore Jeff Thomas was runner-up in the 200 butterfly (1:51.60).
Astashinsky was third in the 400 medley (4:02.91) and had the second-best time in the 100 backstroke finals, but was in the B final after finishing 10th in the preliminaries.
Gilmartin was third in the 50 freestyle (21.21), Thomas came in fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:34.07) and freshman Alec Pokornowski had a fourth-place showing in the 1650 freestyle (16:00.90).
The Terrier Invitational wrapped up fall competition for the Terriers, who will return to action on Jan. 28 when they host Brown and Columbia.
