FAIRFAX, Va. - The Boston University wrestling team competed at the CAA Duals on Saturday and came away with a victory over host George Mason and losses to three other conference rivals. The Terriers had an eight-match dual win streak snapped and now stand at 9-5 on the season.
Senior Fred Santaite was outstanding on the day, winning all four of his matches at 133 to remain undefeated this season with a record of 8-0.
Injuries forced senior John Hall (197) and sophomore Kevin Innis (285) out the lineup.
In the win over George Mason, sophomore Bubba McGinley opened the match with a 5-4 win over Vincent Rodriguez at 125 before Santaite followed with a 15-4 major decision against Zachary Isenhour. Sophomore B.J. Suitor gave BU a 10-0 lead when he recorded a 6-2 victory against Denny Herndon III at 141.
The Patriots got a pin at 149 before the Terriers reeled off four more wins. Sophomore Nick Tourville edged Jaaziah Bethea, 8-7, at 157 and freshman Mitchell Wightman came through with a 6-1 triumph at 165 against Ty Knepp.
Junior Kyle Czarnecki made it 19-6 when he blanked Steve Swayze, 6-0, at 174 and junior Hunter Meys' injury default win at 184 made it 25-6 before the Terriers forfeited the final two bouts.
Czarnecki also added victories against opponents from Binghamton and Hofstra to finish the day with a 3-1 record.
BU will return to the mat on Saturday (Jan. 28) when it hosts Bridgewater State and Duke beginning at 3 p.m.
