ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Sophomore Kevin Innis (285) was victorious in his first career NCAA tournament match and junior Kyle Czarnecki (174) dropped a pair of tight bouts, as the duo represented Boston University at the first day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday at Scottrade Center.
Innis topped Pitt's P.J. Tasser, 5-3, in a first-round match that went into overtime. The sophomore took a 3-0 lead into the third period but allowed an escape before giving up a late takedown in regulation. He wasted little time in the sudden-victory period, earning a quick takedown to advance to the second round.
In his first-ever match in the NCAA tournament, Czarencki and Missouri's Dorian Henderson entered the third period scoreless. A Henderson escape forced Czarnecki to aim for a late takedown, and he was able to get a leg before Henderson fought it off and secured a late takedown in a 4-0 victory.
Third-seeded Clayton Jack of Oregon State was Innis' opponent in the second round. He proved to much too much too handle, as Innis fell in a 17-2 technical fall to drop to the wrestlebacks, where he will face Arizona State's Levi Cooper on Friday morning.
Czarnecki had his season come to an end in the wrestlebacks on Friday evening, as Rider's Jim Resnick pulled off a 7-2 victory. The junior, who beat Resnick in their two previous meetings this season, once again went into the third period scoreless. On bottom to start the final frame, Czarnecki was unable to escape and Resnick secured two three-point near falls before a late reversal proved to be too little, too late.
This year's second-place finisher at the CAAs, Czarnecki finishes his standout season with a record of 23-13.
