EGG HARBOUR, N.J. - The Boston University women's golf team continued its winning ways on Saturday as the Terriers erased a 10-shot deficit in the final round to claim the ECAC Championship at Twisted Dune Golf Course.
This is the second team title for the Terriers this season, as they won the Bucknell Invitational earlier this month. BU also has a second-place performance to its credit and is a combined 34-1 in team play this year.
The Terriers were in fifth place entering Saturday's final round, having carded a 321. They totaled a tournament-low 310 in the final round, however, to finish with a two-day total of 631. BU edged Hartford by two strokes to earn the victory.
"We were a little bit slow yesterday," head coach Bruce Chalas said. "We had a real good team meeting on the bus and at dinner. There was clearly a difference on the practice range this morning and lots of high energy and focus on the course. We knew we were close and played great on the back nine. It was a very determined group."
Two Terriers shot 74 on Saturday, including sophomore Flor Canedo (79-74) who finished in a tie for fifth place individually (153), just two shots off the pace. Freshman Emily Tillo led the Terriers with five birdies today and also shot 74 on Saturday (82-74) to finish tied for ninth with a 156.
"Emily had a huge 74 as a freshman playing in the number one spot," Chalas said. "Flor worked hard all day and this is her fourth round in a row under 80."
Sophomore Kristyna Pavlickova shot 78 on both days to also finish with a 156. Freshman Maddy Silverman had a two-day total of 167 (82-85), while junior Christine Silen had a two-day total of 168 (84-84).
"Maddy played well today," Chalas said. "Huge effort on her part and she's an exciting freshman. We're excited to have Christine's veteran leadership and calming presence. We can always count on her to contribute scores. Kristyna was our leader out there as always."
Chalas also credited mental conditioning coach Val Altieri for playing an important part in the Terriers' victory.
"Val had a good meeting with the girls," Chalas said. "We would not be doing what we’re doing without him. He’s worth a couple shots a tournament, and that difference is huge.”
This is the second straight tournament in which the Terriers have placed three golfers in the top 10. BU has also had a golfer finish in the top five in each of its three tournaments this year. The Terriers sank 16 birdies over the weekend and now have surpassed last season's total of 59. Alumni, family and friends are invited to pledge a gift for every birdie the Terriers sink this season as part of the "Terrier Birdies Challenge" this fall.
New Jersey will once again play host to the Terriers, as BU will compete in the Rutgers Invitational in New Brunswick, N.J., Oct. 5-6.
