EVANSTON, Ill. and CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Highlighted by a quarterfinal appearance by redshirt junior Nestor Taffur in the 157-pound bracket of the Southern Scuffle, three Boston University wrestlers competed in holiday tournaments against some of the nation's top talent this past week.
On Dec. 29, senior Kyle Czarnecki (174) competed in the 50th Midlands Championships at Northwestern, just outside his hometown of Buffalo Grove, Ill. After a 6-1 opening-round loss to ninth-ranked Lee Munster of Northwestern, Czarnecki came back with an 8-2 triumph over Edinboro's Patrick Jennings but fell, 7-3, to Oklahoma's Matt Reed.
At the Southern Scuffle hosted by Tenn.-Chattanooga, Taffur opened with a pair of pins against Appalachian State's Dyllan Cottrell (6:07) and Northern Colorado's Mitchell Polkowske (7:00).
Those wins put him in the quarterfinals, where he dropped a hard-fought 6-4 decision to eighth-ranked Alex Deiringer of Oklahoma State due to a late takedown. Taffur fell one win short of placing following a 10-6 loss to Minnesota's David Zilverberg in the wrestlebacks.
Junior Kevin Innis also competed at the Scuffle, posting a 1-2 record in the 285-pound bracket. He was given the tough task of facing third-ranked Alan Gelogaev of Oklahoma State in the first round and was pinned 26 seconds in. He rebounded with an 8-2 victory over North Carolina's Jake Barnhart before being eliminated by fall 4:56 into his match against Ohio's Jeremy Johnson.
The Terriers will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12, when they host Sacred Heart for a 7 p.m. dual.
