DES MOINES, Iowa - Boston University junior Nestor Taffur picked up his second win before being eliminated by the No. 7 seed to lead the Terriers during the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Friday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Arena.
Taffur, freshman Dane Harlowe and junior Kevin Innis all split their first two matches on Thursday to reach the second day of competition. Both Harlowe and Innis were eliminated in the second round of the wrestlebacks, while Taffur picked up a 9-7 victory over Air Force's Joshua Kreimier.
Finishing with a 36-9 record, the reigning CAA champion Nestor Taffur (157) opened his third match of the tournament with two takedowns to take a 4-2 lead into the second period. Trailing 5-2 to begin the third, Kreimier got a reversal, but Taffur escaped and added a third takedown en route to the win.
Wrestling Virginia Tech's No. 7 seed Jesse Dong in the third round of the wrestlebacks, Taffur took a 2-0 lead after earning a late takedown in the first period. Starting on top in the second though, Dong recorded a two-point near fall and a three-point near fall. The Hokie would hold on for the 9-4 victory.
Facing his second seeded opponent of the tournament after upsetting Virginia's No. 11 George DiCamillo on Thursday, Dane Harlowe (133) battled with Penn State's No. 12 Jordan Conaway. He opened with a takedown, but Conaway came back with an escape and a takedown towards the end of the first period to grab the 3-2 lead.
Conaway escaped in the second for a 4-2 lead and began the third on top. Harlowe got the reversal, but the Nittany Lion earned one in response to eliminate the Terrier, 6-4. Harlowe finished his first season with a 10-7 record and third-place finish at the CAA Championships.
Coming off Thursday night's 2-1 victory over Rutgers' William Smith, the reigning heavyweight CAA champion Kevin Innis started his match against Ohio University's Jeremy Johnson with a takedown.
Following an escape, Johnson got a takedown to head into the second period leading 3-2. The Bobcat opened on top and recorded a three-point near fall before finally getting the pin at 4:12. Innis ended his season and second career NCAA appearance with a 22-8 overall record.
