LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Boston University golf team finished second at the MAAC Championship this past weekend at Disney's Palm Golf Course.
BU never relinquished its hold on the second spot since the tournament began and concluded the three-day event with a score of 969. It is the program's highest-ever finish in the MAAC Championship and the Terriers bested their team total last year by 48 shots. BU was 14 strokes clear of defending champion and third-place Siena (983) while Butler claimed the team title with a score of 937.
Sophomore Kristyna Pavlickova, who entered the final round tied atop the leaderboard, finished five shots back of the winner with a 228 (75-73-80), good for third place. Freshman Maddy Silverman improved her score all three rounds of the tournament to finish ninth with a total of 246 (84-82-80). Classmate Emily Tillo finished in a tie for 12th after she too improved after each round for a three-day score of 249 (87-83-79); she was the only player to break 80 in the final round and claimed MAAC Rookie of the Year honors.
Sophomore Flor Canedo was 14th with a 251 (83-87-81) and junior Christine Silen tied for 19th after shooting a 259 (85-84-90). The Terriers joined Butler as the only teams to have all five players finish in the top 20.
Head coach Bruce Chalas was named Coach of the Year thanks to the Terriers' amazing turnaround season. BU trailed first-place Siena by 78 shots last season but were 14 strokes better than the Saints after this year's tournament for a 92 shot swing.
The MAAC Championship concludes a historic 2012-13 for the Terriers, as they had their best season in program history. BU won three team titles, including the ECAC Championship in September.
