PHILADELPHIA - Highlighted by two semifinalists, four Boston University wrestlers have moved on to the second day of competition at the 2014 EIWA Championships, hosted by Penn at the The Palestra. The Terriers sit in 13th place overall after day one.
Junior Tyler Scotton (141) and senior Nestor Taffur (157) are both one win away from the championship match in their respective brackets.
Scotton upset top-seeded Rich Durso of Franklin & Marshall with a 4-2 sudden-victory decision in the quarterfinals. He'll face fourth-seeded Todd Preston of Harvard in Sunday's semifinal.
Taffur, the No. 1 seed at 157, notched a 9-5 win over eighth-seeded Anthony Perrotti in the quarterfinal round. His semifinal opponent will be Austin Sommer of Drexel.
Two other Terriers still have their NCAA hopes alive in the consolation brackets. Senior Bubba McGinley (125) and junior Mitchell Wightman (165) each won two of three matches on the day.
In regards to NCAA allocations in the weight classes, McGinley, Scotton and Taffur are all guaranteed spots in the national tournament if they win their first match on Sunday.
Eight of the 10 Terriers competing at the tournament earned at least one win on Saturday.
Junior Andrew Maksimovic pulled off the biggest upset of the opening round when he pinned top-seeded Elliot Riddick of Lehigh in the final second of their match at 174.
At 133, sophomore Dane Harlowe opened a 6-0 victory over Grimaldi Gonzalez of Bucknell before falling to the first and third seeds in his bracket. His final bout against No. 3 Colton Rasche of Navy went to overtime.
After a loss in the morning pigtails, senior Alex Najjar pulled off a wild 20-16 win over Charles Kerkesner (Frankling & Marshall) in the wrestlebacks before being edged by a single point in his next bout.
Senior Nick Tourville also won his first match in the wrestlebacks - a 5-1 triumph over Binghamton's Joe Bonaldi - before being eliminated in a hard-fought 4-3 bout against fourth-seeded Alex Johnson of Navy.
Senior heavyweight Kevin Innis had his standout career come to an end. The two-time NCAA qualifier earned 69 wins over his four years with the Terriers.
