The nonprofit group Ice Hockey in Harlem (IHIH) continued its partnership with Boston University Athletics on Friday and Saturday, visiting the BU campus for an educational tour and taking in the men's ice hockey game vs. UNH on Friday night.
IHIH arrived at BU on Friday afternoon for an extensive tour of the BU campus given by Boston University's assistant dean of students Daryl DeLuca. The players, parents and coaches toured the School of Management building, met with BU students for a question and answer session at the Howard Thurman Center and viewed the Martin Luther King Memorial Statue. The group then stopped by the FitRec Center before enjoying a meal at the West Campus Dining Hall.
"Ice Hockey in Harlem was thrilled with our first-class visit to Boston University on Friday and Saturday, and the chance to build on such an exciting partnership," said Ice Hockey in Harlem's program director Brad Preston. "The in-depth information our students received about the university and the entire college process will be invaluable in the years ahead. The attention of such enthusiastic administrators all weekend long made our students feel important, and the chance to hear from BU students at the Howard Thurman Center - especially students from backgrounds like theirs - brought our players in closer. They now view Boston University as a worthy and realistic goal."
After the tour and dinner, Ice Hockey in Harlem attended the BU men's ice hockey game vs. UNH on Friday night. On Saturday morning, the group held an early practice at Walter Brown Arena before embarking on a sightseeing tour of historic Boston before heading home to New York.
"It was a great pleasure to host and welcome the students, parents and coaches from Ice Hockey in Harlem to Boston University," said Boston University's assistant dean of students Daryl DeLuca. "During the course of our BU campus tour, I was enormously impressed with the student's academic caliber, their interest in Boston University and their appetites as we had an opportunity to experience University food at the West Campus Dining Hall. We hope their visit to Boston University got the young men and women thinking about the possibilities of higher education and how it is in reach for all. We hope they will visit again and continue to keep their eyes on the prize of a university education."
BU Athletics and IHIH's partnership began in Dec. 2013 when the Boston University men's ice hockey team visited New York City to play Cornell at Madison Square Garden. During the trip, the Terriers stopped by Lasker Rink in New York's Harlem neighborhood to hold a clinic for the Ice Hockey in Harlem players and to donate books for their after school reading program. The continued partnership is based on a shared mission that higher education should be available to children of all economic backgrounds.
