ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Adela Cejnarova won the individual title and three Terriers finished in the top five to lead the Boston University golf team to its first-ever Patriot League championship on Sunday afternoon at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club.
BU won its first conference title since 2007 by 10 strokes over second-place Lehigh. The Terriers led wire-to-wire, holding a 12-shot lead after the first round and an 18-shot advantage entering Sunday. BU carded a 54-hole total of 929 (307-305-317), which is a new conference tournament record.
Thanks to their victory this weekend, the Terriers also earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be broadcast live on The Golf Channel on April 27 at 7 p.m. BU will play at one of four possible Regional sites - Raleigh, North Carolina; San Antonio, Texas; South Bend, Indiana; and St. George, Utah.
Cejnarova never ceded her spot atop the individual leaderboard and finished with a final-round 76 for a Patriot League-record score of 222 (72-74-76). She was six shots in front of junior Emily Tillo, who finished with a 228 (77-74-77), three strokes ahead of the third-place competitor. Tillo's eight birdies over the three days led all golfers. Cejnarova was named the Most Outstanding Player one year after being named Rookie of the Year. She made a tournament-best 39 pars over the weekend as part of her consistent play.
For the fourth consecutive season, a Terrier is a conference's top rookie. Highlighted by an even-par 72 during her second round, freshman Phyllis Tang finished fifth with a total of 235 (79-72-84) and was named Most Outstanding Rookie. Senior Kristyna Pavlickova tied for 15th with a 248 (79-89-80) to round out the top-four Terriers. Junior Sarah Easton finished her first conference tournament appearance with a 54-hole score of 256 (83-85-88).
Head coach Bruce Chalas praised Pavlickova's play on the back-nine Sunday. "It was the best nine holes that Kristyna played in her four-year career," Chalas said. "She fired a one-over 37 over her final nine holes with an NCAA Regional spot on the line, a goal that was set in her freshman year."
Tang, Tillo and Cejnarova were All-Patriot League First-Team selections. Cejnarova and Tang both set a Patriot League record with individual rounds of 72 during the weekend - Cejnarova opened the weekend with one while Tang carded hers in Saturday's afternoon session. Tillo and Cejnarova were two of just three golfers to break 80 during all three rounds this weekend.
