BU Honors Department's Best at 2018-19 Rhettys

BOSTON - Boston University's Department of Athletics gathered on Monday evening at the Metcalf Ballroom at George Sherman Union for The Rhettys, the annual student-athlete awards banquet. Major awards were handed out in addition to the Athlete Choice Awards in collaboration with BU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Traditional Awards
Joseph P. Mercurio Campus Community Recognition Award
Daryl DeLuca, Assistant Dean of Students
Paul Lewis Student-Athlete Service Award
Johnny Kemps (Men's Cross Country and Track & Field)
- Senior captain of the cross country and track & field teams and member of SAAC
- Named to 2019 All-Patriot League First Team in cross country and is a three-time member of the PL All-Academic Team
- President and founding member of the BU chapter of Athlete Ally, a nonprofit group that works with the athletic community to champion LGBTQ equality
- Helped organize BU Athletics' first Pride Night at the men's basketball game as well as BU Athletics' Pride Week
John B. Simpson Award (seniors who have demonstrated enthusiasm and leadership)
Grant Eberst (Men's Rowing) & Reagan Rust (Women's Ice Hockey)
Eberst
- Recruited walk-on is now a member of BU's varsity eight boat that is currently ranked No. 8 in the nation
- Had impressive progression his early years at BU and ranked 2nd among all athletes on team by the Fall of 2018
- His easy-going attitude, spirt and enthusiasm follows him and he is commonly seen leading team members to cheer on BU athletes at other sporting events
Rust
- Named a captain for her senior season after transferring here as a junior
- Helped lead a Terrier squad that was picked to finish fifth in Hockey East at the beginning of the season to a 21-win campaign and a top-10 national ranking
- Scored shootout winner in opening round of the Beanpot and tallied a goal in the championship game en route to the team's first Beanpot title since 1981
- Truly led by example and created a winning culture for the team, evidenced by the work ethic on the ice, in the strength and conditioning room and in the classroom
E. Ray Speare Award (Top senior male scholar-athlete)
Trevor Winans (Men's Swimming)
- Three-time All-Patriot League member (2x first team 2017, 2018, second team 2019)
- Three-time PL Academic All-League and Honor Roll member
- Holds the school record in the 200 and 500 free
- Won at least one individual event in seven of BU's 11 meets during the regular season
- Had a hand in 129 of the Terriers' 376 points at the Patriot League Championships this season
Gretchen Schuyler Award (Top senior female scholar-athlete)
Remi Ramos (Women's Tennis)
- Owner of a 3.80 GPA, Ramos is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member
- Named both Patriot League Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year after leading the Terriers to their fourth consecutive conference title and NCAA appearance in 2017
- Two-time All-Patriot League honoree
- Has recorded a combined 104 singles and doubles victories

Harry Agganis Terrier Pride Award
Alex Heinen (Softball)
- Two-time team captain who was named a top-30 finalist back in March for the Senior CLASS Award, which honors NCAA Division I seniors who have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition
- Three-time All-Conference honoree and two-time NCAA participant
- Became the second catcher in Patriot League history to be named the conference's Player of the Year in 2018
- Owns program record for career RBIs (149) and ranks in the top 10 for hits, doubles and homers
Bruce Lehane Coaching Award
Brian Durocher (Women's Ice Hockey)
- Has won 285 games in 14 seasons as the head coach of the women's ice hockey team
- Led Terriers to first Beanpot title since 1981 as part of seventh 20-win season in program history
- Has advanced to Hockey East semifinals in 11 of the last 12 years
- Has coached five All-Americans and four top-10 finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award, given annually to the top women's hockey player in Division I
Mildred Barnes Award (Top female athlete)
Ally Hammel (Field Hockey)
- First two-time first-team All-American in program history
- Named NFHCA Northeast Region Player of the Year and Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year each of the past two seasons
- Led BU to four straight PL regular-season titles, three PL tournament titles and three NCAA tournament appearances
- Currently competing on the U.S. Women's National Development Squad
Mickey Cochrane Award (Top male athlete)
Chris Gray (Men's Lacrosse)
- Leads NCAA with 94 points (41 goals and 53 assists)
- The 94 points and 53 assists are both single-season program records
- Named an Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-American and was selected to the initial Tewaaraton Watch List
- Has averaged 6.7 points per game and has yet to be held to fewer than four points in any of his 14 games this season
Woman of the Year
Pietra Sweeney (Women's Soccer)
- Two-year starter and four-time PL Academic Honor Roll member
- Helped BU to its fourth PL championship in 2018 as part of a defense that had 11 shutouts and limited opponents to just 0.86 goals per game
- Spent a week in Nicaragua with Soccer Without Borders, a non-profit organization that provides an avenue for positive engagement, personal growth and a brighter future through soccer
- Ran the Boston Marathon last week to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester

Breakout Athlete - Male: Marcel Aubry (Men's Track & Field), Female: Sarah Cicchetti (Women's Track & Field)
Upset of the Year - Abby Gugel capturing 5k title at PL Indoor Track & Field Championships
Play of the Year - Maggie New's game-winning goal in the PL Field Hockey title game
Moment of the Year - Women's Ice Hockey wins first Beanpot title since 1981
- Brian Maurer (COM'07) served as emcee for the evening while several student-athletes were presenters for the Athlete Choice Awards.
- Women's Tennis won the Team GPA Award with an impressive 3.64 during the fall semester.
- Seniors Michael Laviano (MLAX) and Lauren Spearman (WBB) will be the recipients of the Aldo "Buff" Donelli Award for Leadership at the 2019 BU Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony, which will be held in October
