BOSTON – Highlighted by matchups against two defending conference champions and two major conference opponents, ninth-year Boston University men's basketball head coach Joe Jones has released the team's 2019-20 non-conference schedule.
The program's 111th season will be a memorable one, as the Terriers will embark on a previously-announced preseason trip to Spain on Aug. 9-19 and then later fly south to Mexico for the Cancun Challenge on Nov. 26-27. In total, BU will compete in four exhibition games overseas and 13 regular season games in North America with four taking place at The Roof.
Fans will get their first opportunity to see the team in person on Tuesday, Nov. 5, when BU hosts defending CAA champion Northeastern at 7 p.m. in the season opener for both teams. The thrilling rivalry has had 12 of the last 13 meetings decided by single digits, including BU's 77-74 win at Matthews Arena last season. The Terriers will also host SUNY Poly (Nov. 9), former America East rival New Hampshire (Nov. 16) and Ivy League foe Dartmouth (Dec. 14).
Road trip highlights include visits to defending America East champion Vermont (Nov. 13), SEC member South Carolina (Nov. 19), Big 12 opponent West Virginia (Nov. 22) and Atlantic 10 foe George Washington (Dec. 4). The Terriers last faced the Gamecocks in 1981 and most memorably played the Mountaineers in a 1959 NCAA Elite Eight matchup that featured Naismith Hall of Famer Jerry West shining for the 86-82 win over BU.
While in Cancun, BU will face Northern Colorado (Nov. 26) and then either defending Big South champion Gardner-Webb or UT Martin on Nov. 27. The non-conference slate will conclude at UMass Lowell (Dec. 21) and Merrimack (Dec. 29), who announced last September its move from Division II status to the Northeast Conference. Though both the Terriers and Warriors have been members in Hockey East for 30+ years, the contest will mark their first meeting on the hardcourt since 1984.
