Terriers Host Virtual Holiday Reading Program
December 15, 2020 | Community Service
BOSTON – Although it looked a little different this year, Boston University student-athletes participated in the 24th annual Holiday Reading Program on Friday and Monday.
Unable to visit Boston Public Schools in person this holiday season due to ongoing concerns over COVID-19, the Terriers visited classrooms virtually via Zoom and used the digital reading platform Epic to read to local children and answer questions about college life.
In conjunction with BU's Government and Community Affairs Department, the Terriers read to first and second graders at the Trotter School in Dorchester, the Gardner Pilot School in Allston and the Blackstone School in the South End. In all, BU student-athletes read to over 200 children in nine classrooms.
"Although we were unable to visit in person this year, it was very important for us to continue the tradition of BU's Holiday Reading Program-especially during this difficult year," said director of athletics Drew Marrochello. "I can't think of a better way to end 2020 than having our student-athletes read and serve as mentors to Boston Public School children. We hope everyone at Boston Public Schools stays safe and healthy and we look forward to returning in person in 2021."
Dating back to 1997, the two-day event was held on Dec. 11 & 14 and marked the 24th-consecutive year that the Terriers visited Boston public Schools during the holiday season.
"We were thrilled to once again have BU student-athletes read to BPS students and answer questions about college life," said Cecilia Nardi, director of community relations in BU's Office of Government & Community Affairs. "While it wasn't the same as being there, we are thankful to all the teachers and staff who helped us join their online learning spaces. We're already looking forward to seeing everyone next year."
