BU Athletics Partners with Nonprofit SG United
March 28, 2020 | Field Hockey, General, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Community Service
Boston University student-athletes kicked off their partnership with the nonprofit group Strong Girls United on Friday, posting an online workout geared for young girls.
The video marked the beginning of an ongoing program with the nonprofit whose mission is to empower and inspire girls to become their best, happiest, strongest version of themselves through sports, mindfulness, and leadership programming.
The community service initiative, which was spearheaded by BU student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) secretary and member of the field hockey team Livy Golini, has been in the planning stages since the fall semester. Volunteers completed training in February and in person mentoring was scheduled to begin in March at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Dorchester but face-to-face meetings were canceled due to the ongoing spread of COVID 19.
SG United founder and chief empowerment officer Lani Silversides created the idea for online exercise videos in the absence of visits as way to help young girls in the community who are stuck at home due to the pandemic. On Friday, the video was posted live on SG United's YouTube page.
"We are so excited to be partnering with the Terriers," said Silversides. "Young girls idolize older female student-athletes and for them the get to learn the importance of education and sport through college athletes is like getting to work with celebrities."
"Additionally, we have found that the student-athletes themselves get just as much out of the experience as the little girls that look up to them."
