Four Terriers Earn Patriot League Year-End Recognition
March 2, 2021 | Men's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second consecutive year, the defending Patriot League champion Boston University men's basketball team had at least four Terriers earn year-end accolades, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Javante McCoy (2nd) and junior Walter Whyte (3rd) both received their second All-Conference awards after swapping places from a year prior, while junior Jonas Harper earned his second All-Defensive Team honor alongside first-time member, senior Sukhmail Mathon.
A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, McCoy finished the regular season ranked ninth in the PL averaging 15.6 ppg while shooting a personal-best 47.3 percent from the field. The 2020 All-Conference Third Team member added a personal-best 4.9 rpg to help on the defensive end, as he came up one rebound shy of his first career double-double on two occasions this year. In one highlight performance, he went 7-of-9 FG and a perfect 6-of-6 FT for 21 points while dishing out six assists against one turnover for the victory against Holy Cross. For the season, he reached double figures 12 times to move up to No. 16 all-time at BU with 1,281 career points.
Owner of three double-doubles this season, Whyte currently ranks seventh in the PL for rebounding (6.8 rpg) and 12th in scoring (13.2 ppg) to help earn his third overall PL year-end honor after receiving 2018 All-Rookie and 2020 All-PL Second Team recognition. He also averaged 1.1 spg and tallied at least two steals in a game four times. The New Haven, Connecticut, native posted a career-high 13 rebounds with 15 points against Colgate in his first appearance and later had a season-high 17 points in a win at Holy Cross. He just needs 123 more points to become the 40th Terrier to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
Harper also received his third overall year-end award from the conference after being placed on the All-Rookie Team in 2019 and All-Defensive Team in 2020. He's just the second Terrier to be honored twice for his defensive efforts, joining Patrick Hazel ('12). The Stamford, Connecticut, native finished tied-for-first with Whyte on the team at 15 steals while averaging 7.8 ppg and 39.2 3FG%. In two standout defensive performances, he played a critical role in holding 2021 All-PL First Team honoree Justin Jaworski (21.0 ppg, 45.0 FG%) to a combined 34 points on 10-of-29 (.349) shooting.
Mathon received his first PL honor after finishing the regular season ranked in seven conference categories. He currently sits third in rebounding at 7.9 rpg while also ranking seventh in blocks (1.1 bpg) behind six multi-block performances. The Shavertown, Pennsylvania, native posted three of his four career double-doubles this season, highlighted by a career-high 19 points and season-high 12 rebounds at Colgate alongside two blocks. He also averaged 10.8 ppg and 1.9 apg while shooting 54.8 percent from the field.
The seventh-seeded Terriers will open the 2021 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night (March 3) at 7 p.m. by hosting No. 10 Lehigh.
