ALBANY, N.Y. – In a contest featuring 10 lead changes and six ties, the University at Albany utilized 14 3-pointers to pull away from the Boston University men's basketball team in an 86-72 decision on Wednesday night at Broadview Center.
The Terriers (2-5) overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to briefly lead with 12:05 left in regulation, but the Great Danes (4-3) responded with five treys and 15 made free throws down the stretch to win their home opener.
Freshman
Kyrone Alexander led BU with 15 points, while senior
Miles Brewster (13 pts.), junior
Ethan Okwuosa (13 pts.) and sophomore
Nico Nobili (12 pts.) also finished in double figures. Okwuosa posted a team-high nine rebounds, and junior
Malcolm Chimezie nearly had a double-double with eight points and eight boards alongside two blocks.
Tyler Bertram flushed six of UAlbany's 14 3-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points, as Sebastian Thomas earned a double-double off 16 points and 10 assists. Jonathan Beagle recorded 14 points and eight boards, while Amar'e Marshall (14 pts.) and Ny'Mire Little (10 pts.) scored in double digits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UAlbany set the tone early with 3-pointers on the first two possessions for an early 6-2 lead before BU struck back with a 10-1 run started by Alexander's own 3-pointer and capped by Nobili's trey at 14:24.
- After Brewster retook the lead, 19-18, six minutes later from behind the arc, the teams traded blows for five straight minutes with Chimezie scoring on a layup for a 28-27 lead.
- Bertram's 3-pointer sparked a 10-0 run capped by Little's trey with 19 seconds remaining to give UAlbany a 37-28 halfitme lead.
- BU scored five consecutive points to start the second half, but shortly thereafter found itself back down nine, 44-35, at 15:47.
- The Terriers then went on a 10-1 run with the help of four Alexander free throws and Chimezie's layup at 13:21 to tie the game, 45-45.
- Chimezie's pair of free throws with 12:05 remaining gave BU its final lead, 49-48, before Bertram struck again from behind the arc.
- Marshall converted on his steal with a layup following another Bertram trey at 5:48 to extend the lead to 66-55.
- Okwuosa responded with a layup, and Nobili added three free throws to cut BU's deficit to 66-60 at 4:47.
- The Terriers though would never get any closer in the loss.
GAME NOTES
- Thanks to seven free throws on nine attempts, Nobili became the 10th Terrier through just seven games to score in double figures.
- Alexander joined freshman Matai Baptiste to lead BU in points a second time this year.
- BU nearly doubled UAlbany in points in the paint, 38-20, but the Great Danes attempted 37 free throws against BU's 26 trips to the line after opponents combined for 35 attempts over the previous three contests.
- The Great Danes' 14 3-pointers are the most by an opponent since Dartmouth also hit 14 in New Hampshire back in 2018.
- UAlbany cut BU's all-time series lead to 20-10, as the teams met for the first time in five years.
